How to flash a Google Pixel factory image

Factory images restore a Pixel to stock firmware. The easiest way is Google’s Android Flash Tool in Chrome; the manual way uses fastboot. Both need an unlocked bootloader and erase the phone.

Before you start

  • Make sure the image is for your exact codename (for example husky for Pixel 8 Pro). Flashing another device’s image can brick the phone.
  • Back up everything. Unlocking the bootloader and flashing wipe all data.
  • On the phone: Settings → About phone → tap Build number 7 times, then Settings → System → Developer options → turn on OEM unlocking and USB debugging.
  • Install the latest Android SDK Platform-Tools (adb and fastboot) from Google. Use a USB-C cable that supports data.

Easiest: Android Flash Tool

  1. In Chrome on your computer open flash.android.com.
  2. Connect the phone and allow USB debugging on it.
  3. Pick your device and the build you want (it matches the files listed here), then click Install. The tool unlocks, flashes and can re-lock the bootloader for you.

Manual: fastboot

  1. Unzip the factory image. You get a folder with flash-all.sh (Mac/Linux), flash-all.bat (Windows) and an inner zip.
  2. Boot to the bootloader: turn the phone off, then hold Volume Down + Power. Or run adb reboot bootloader.
  3. If the bootloader is locked, run fastboot flashing unlock and confirm on the phone with the volume and power keys. This erases the phone.
  4. In the unzipped folder run flash-all.bat (Windows) or ./flash-all.sh (Mac/Linux). Don’t unplug the phone until it reboots.
  5. Optional: to re-lock, go back to the bootloader and run fastboot flashing lock. Only re-lock on fully stock firmware — locking with modified software can brick the phone.

If something goes wrong

  • fastboot doesn’t see the phone: on Windows install the Google USB Driver, try another cable or port, and check with fastboot devices.
  • “Anti-rollback” or “device is locked” errors: you are trying to install an older build that the phone refuses, or the bootloader is still locked. Use a newer build or unlock first.
